چکیده

This paper discusses the role and the evolution of animation, simulation and scientific visualization and their relationships. Two trends are described: (1) the physical laws are well-known and their use improves the animation (2) the physical laws are not really wellknown and the animation techniques contribute to understand them. We distinguish descriptive models used to reproduce an effect without knowledge about its cause and generative models describing the cause which produces the effects. Cooperation between descriptive and generative models is also discussed as well as man-machine interface constraints. Finally, the evolution of animation towards automatic motion control, goaloriented motion, task modeling and behavioral animation is emphasized. 1. Animation, simulation and visualization

Genetic programming for articulated figure motion

We present an approach to articulated figure motion in which motion tasks are defined in terms of goals and ratings. The agents are dynamically-controlled robots whose behavior is determined by robotic controller programs. The controller programs for the robots are evaluated at each time step to yield torque values which drive the dynamic simulation of the motion. We use the AI technique of Gen...

Chemical kinetics-assisted, path-based smoke simulation

Despite recent successes in physics-based fluid animation, generating desired fluid flow with intuitive control of its motion still remains a challenging problem in the special effects industry. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for path-based smoke simulation that explores the theory of chemical kinetics in an aim to provide a useful animation tool. By describing intended smoke effect...

An Advanced Modeling and Simulation Tool for Analysis of Mechatronic Systems

A new modeling and simulation tool, the Virtual Test Bed (VTB), is introduced. The VTB is a software environment that has been developed for design, analysis, and virtual prototyping of large-scale multi-technical systems. It has the capability of integrating models, which have been created in a variety of languages such as SPICE, ACSL , and SABER , into one simulation environment. It also pr...

Computer animation of human walking: a survey

This paper surveys the set of techniques developed in Computer Graphics for animating human walking. First, we focus on the evolution from purely kinematic \knowledgebased" methods to approaches that incorporate dynamics constraints, or use dynamics simulations to generate motion. Then, we review the recent advances in motion editing, that enable the control of complex animations by interactive...
